Little known facts.
People who have had dinner at Steve and Jackie’s were often served on Portmeirion Botanic Garden china. Steve acquired a full set on a roadtrip with Judy to meet and visit with her English friends. This time the vehicle of choice was a Morris-Mini--cheap to rent and easy on gas. The car was surprisingly roomy and comfortable for the driver and passenger, but didn’t have much room for cargo. Our combined luggage pretty much filled the back. We were in a small town in Wales when we first spotted the Portmeirion dishes. At that time, there were none in the U.S. and both of us were taken with the design. Steve decided to purchase a set of plates, and then salad plates, and then bowls, and then.... True to one of his bon mots, “More is Better,” his pile kept getting bigger and bigger while I fretted about our lack of space. The rest of the trip, we worried and rearranged, and padded the fragile load. The worst part came when we were packing for the flight home. All of the dishes had to go with us in our luggage. Shipping would be too expensive. Fortunately, weight and size limits were more lenient then, but, of course, garments were discarded to make room for the full set of china. Its always fun for me to see them in use at dinner parties.
